This is the second part of The Ancients, a series of posts explaining Earth\u2019s history; all with sarcasm and funny quips from yours truly. You should check out the first one before this one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, after the Hadean (The eon\nwhere everything evaporated), there came the Archean. The Archean was when the\nfirst tectonic plates were created. The Earth cooled a bit, and decided that \n \n \nmaybe, life wasn\u2019t so bad after all.\nHowever, the temperature was still around twice or thrice what it is today.\nThis was because of the greenhouse gases swirling in the atmosphere (like our\nEarth now), due to all the VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS that happened in the Hadean.\nAlso, there was a lot of heat from the growth of the planet\u2019s core. Oxygen\nstill didn\u2019t exist yet, but there were oceans, so\u2026 win-win? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember when I said that the\nEarth collided with LITERALLY EVERYTHING? Well, that kept going on in this eon.\nScientists figured that out by researching on how old the Moon\u2019s craters were.\nUsing this information, they learnt that there were 22,000 craters with\ndiameters of 20 KILOMETERS. 20! That\u2019s 102 times bigger than a tennis court!\nOh, and they found 40 craters with diameters bigger than 1000 km. They also\nfound \u2018several\u2019 craters with 5000km diameters. That is one big meteor. Why did\nthis happen? Well, the outer planets underwent \u2018orbital migration\u2019 (Which I\ncould not for the life of me find a definition for, but I think it means their\norbits shifted as they grew bigger) and basically just threw a bunch of meteors\nat us. Thanks a LOT! This event delayed the formation of life in the early\nArchean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notice how I said \u2018delayed\u2019.\nThat\u2019s right, we got life! Well, sort of. Banded iron formations \u2013 formations\nmade of silver and iron, requires oxygen to form, and that oxygen was procured\nthrough photosynthesis, which was the only source of oxygen, actually. Life!\nStromatolites existed, and they are made from mats of dead micro-organisms.\nMore life! Primaevifilum amoenum <\/em>is the oldest known bacteria, which\nwere formed during the Archean. They were first found in Western Australia.\nEven more life! Lastly, Acritarcha <\/em>are the remains of various organic\nstructures-like egg casings. So. Much. LIFE! But I digress. There is much more\nlife to come. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
